The in-built digital color Point-finder with 4x zoom makes aiming at long distances much easier. You can even carry out measurements in bright sunlight.

Using the tilt sensor you can also take indirect measurements. From this the horizontal distance can be derived in spite of obstructions.

The Leica DISTO D5 and D8 with its color screen requires greater power than previous models. To make up for this higher quality battery intended for high tech equipment such as digital cameras have been provided with these units. For even longer battery life try using Lithium batteries as these will double the amount of measurements you will get with your DISTO D5 over what you get with the provided batteries.

Inexpensive generic batteries or zinc-carbon batteries should not be used as they can damage this unit. The minimum standard is Alkaline, and even then you will likely want to go with a higher quality battery.

The backlight of the D5 and D8 display can be made brighter in the Menu. The standard setting is 2/6, if you are in a bright environment you can change the setting to 6/6. This does however lead to faster power consumption, so you should not use this as your standard setting.
