Woodworking planers have been the staple of stock dimensioning in every variation of the woodworking shop, be it sash and door, pattern shops, millwork, cabinetry and even home shops. The thickness planer launched the woodworking industry forward beyond anyone in the nineteenth century could have imagined, what skilled craftsmen could do in hours, a mere apprentice could match him in minutes. Over the years, planers have evolved from the period designed cast iron frames of the industrial revolution, to the high tech automated machines they are today. In the past few decades, the home shop has welcomed the arrival of the smaller, lighter, more portable bench top units we see nowadays, alongside the traditional production grade machines. The most common sizes of 12" to 15" suit the needs of small shops and home shops, whilst larger models from 16" to 25" are ideal for the production shop.
