Porter Cable 7424 XP Detailing Process:
Automobile detailing is much more than a quick wash and vacuum; detailing requires planning and attention to the details. Exterior detailing requires a methodical approach and is a lot easier than having to completely dismantle or repaint the car. The Porter Cable 7424 XP has always been and still is the #1 Car Buffer Polisher among both beginners and the professional car detailer. Here are a few simple hints to get you started and on your way:- Safety Considerations: Consider wearing ear protection while using heavy-duty wet/dry vacuum and other machines that create high pitched nose. Sensitive skin should be protected with lightweight gloves and if you are considering using a power washing, goggles are a good option.
- Washing Your Vehicle: Make sure you remove License plates, mounted spare tires, detachable racks, bras and other accessible items. Fill your bucket only half way which allows the rest to fill up with soapsuds. Start from top to bottom, constantly refreshing your bucket. As you wash the lower areas of the vehicle, check to ensure the wash mitt is not collecting a bunch of grit. Use a soft floppy paintbrush along the window trim, tight places and windshield wipers. Use a damp towel to wipe down dusty doorjambs, Hood Edges and Trunk Edges.
- Removing Tree Sap, Bird Droppings, Bug Splatter: Try Soap and water first, but on those tuff to remove spots you can use a standard on the shelf Bug and Tar remover, or very fine 1,000 - 2,000 grit we/dry sandpaper (make sure the surface and the sandpaper is very wet).
- Buffing Polishing: Polish and wax are not the same thing. Polishes clean and waxes protect. You cannot remove oxidation by using wax alone; it will smear and be impossible to remove from a severly oxidized painted surface. So first start with your polish, we would suggest using a mild polish two or three times rather than use a polish that is too harsh a single time. Attach your Astro 4506 Velcro backing plate and select one of the Lake Country 6.5" Cutting Pads (Yellow or Orange). These pads are used with polish to remove oxidation and surface contaminants. This step will leave behind exceptionally light swirl marks generally only visible in direct sunlight, however, once you get to the waxing and buffing stage, these swirl marks will be removed. Lay out a line of polish, with the Porter Cable 7424 XP Buffer turned off, spread the polish over a 2 x 2 foot section, with the pad motionless. This will greatly help to reduce the amount of polish splatter. Buff a section at a time, using the car's body lines as guides. Buff until the polish is gone and the paint shines. This might require 3 or 4 passes. Once Buffing with a Polish is complete, your car should shine nicely.
- Buffing Waxing: Cream waxes work best and last longer than liquid wax products when used with finishing pads to buff paint. Buffing with a foam pad and wax is not much different than buffing with a cutting pad and polish Keep the buffer moving and clean the pad as necessary. Of course, with the Porter Cable 7424 XP you do not have to worry about burn marks. Attach the Lake Country CCS Blue Pad or the Red CCS Foam Pad for Wax application. Also one of our most popular Lake Country CCS Pad is the CCS White Foam Pad for medium to fine polishing and cleaner wax application.
