section within our Power Tools departmentWhat we commonly call a circular saw was first invented by Edmond Michael in 1923 and it used a worm gear to drive the motor. With this invention he founded the company that is now known as Skilsaw Inc. and owned by Bosch. In 1928 Art Emmons of Porter Cable invented the more common sidewinder-type saw that we know today. This type of mechanism drives the blade directly rather than indirectly through worm gears. Now, whether you are cutting wood, masonry, plastics or metal there is a circular saw designed for every application.
