There are many types of drilling tools and equipment available to construction workers and do-it-yourselfers. While the fundamentals of drilling are similar across the board, there are special drills for certain jobs. An electomagnetic drill press is a stationary style of drill which is usually mounted to the work piece, whether on a jobsite or construction site. Basically, there are two portions to the drill: a) magnetic portion, which has to be turned on, and attaches itself to the metal (magnetic service); b) drill press portion for drilling. The work piece should be at least 3/8" or thicker ferrous material to provide the required holding power. An electromagnetic drill press in many cases has advantages over handheld drills, including less effort to apply the drill to the material you are working with, and also that the use of a clamp makes the drilling action more secure. Electromagnetic drill presses are available in various models from brands like Fein and Milwaukee.
