If more spindle capacity is needed, adding the 18" extension kit (#6294727B, includes a solid steel tool rest extension) is a simple bolt-on procedure. This extension can be mounted to extend the primary bed rails or in a second set of mounting holes 9" lower to create a classic bowl-style machine capable of turning material up to 38" in diameter! Another benefit of this "off the end" configuration is being able to work directly in front of the bowl or platter.

Solid, expensive, useful, incomplete

The bed extension does exactly what it is supposed to do so if you want more length or swing capacity from your 3520 lathe, this is just the accessory to make that happen. It is overpriced for a simple casting but that's part of the deal with Powermatic. Their machines are still very good.Given the cost of Powermatic tools and the image as very high quality, this extension should at least come with the striping decals to match the lathe. I was able to get them direct from Powermatic but at extra cost and with a bit of hassle from customer service.
I had to use a file to fine-tune the fit of the extension to allow the tail stock to slide freely but that was not really a big deal and almost expected given the lack of precision dowel pins. And, while you can increase the swing capacity by bolting the extension to the lower set of bolt holes on the lathe and the kit comes with an extension for the tool rest, you can't use the tail stock because there is no riser for it either in the kit or as an accessory from anyone that I could find. This would be a great addition to facilitate turning very large bowls.

There were no striping decals included to really make it match to the lathe as an OEM item should. Had to use a file to match the ways to the existing bed to allow easy sliding of the tail stock between the riser and existing bed.I would recommend this item to a friend.
