In the 1920s, Abe and Lillian Rosenberg saw a growing demand for hand tools and other specialty items, deemed "hard goods". They soon founded and opened General Hardware Manufacturing Co. and the dream was born. Originally selling domestic and professional items, Abe decided in the 1930s to expand and brought his ideas and product line to various manufacturers in the area; culminating in selling his own product line through the store in 1937. Because of this entrepreneurial spirit, General was one of the first companies to build die cast tools. Through Lillian's dedication and management, General provided tools for the US and British armies in World War II. When Abe died in 1977, his daughter took over the company and expanded the line to what it is today. In 1990, the company name changed to General Tools to accurately reflect what the line sells. Today, the company is still in the family, run by Abe's grandson Gerald Weinstein.
